How Does Tony Gonsolin’s Injury Affect the Dodgers Decision Regarding Lance Lynn?

News broke on Monday that Tony Gonsolin will undergo Tommy John surgery on September 1 shortly after being put on the 60-day Injured List.

While his 2024 season is now in jeopardy of being subjective to only spectating, another name pops up for a possible 2024 campaign: Lance Lynn.

Lynn was acquired at the trade deadline by the Dodgers in order to bolster their starting rotation that has suffered many injuries including a season-ending one to Dustin May and short-term IL stints to Clayton Kershaw and Julio Urias.

Lynn was having a terrible 2023 owning the worst ERA of any qualified starter in baseball and also leading the league in home runs given up.

Since the acquisition, Lynn has shocked the baseball world owning an outstanding 2.03 ERA with the Dodgers and going 4-0 in his 5 starts with the team. The long balls have still been a problem but Lynn has managed to turn mult-run longballs in Chicago to just lone solo shots in Chavez Ravine.

Lynn is a 36-year-old experienced veteran and has looked like he is close to his old self now that he is in Los Angeles and enjoying every minute of it.

The grizzled veteran is eating innings for the team in the regular season and should hopefully pitch meaningful innings in the postseason come October, but his spot on the team past this season is still in question.

Lance Lynn’s contract has an $18 million club option that the Dodgers can exercise for the 2024 season if the team believes that he will be worth it. That pricetag would put him just outside of the top 20 for salary for starting pitchers in 2024.

The long recovery time that Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May have ahead of them puts into question whether either of them will pitch in 2024, especially in a starter role.

Good performance and unfortunate injuries may just bring Lynn back to the ball club in 2024 to help the team have another amazing year.
