Women with breast implants are nearly three times likely to commit suicide, and three times as likely to die from alcohol or drug use according to new research.
Researchers followed 3,527 Swedish women who had cosmetic breast implant surgery between 1965 and 1993. Results of the study, published in the journal Annals of Plastic Surgery, showed more that 24 of the women had committed suicide after an average of 19 years.
The number may seem small but the data showed that it was triples the risk compared to the average population. The team of researchers, led by Dr Loren Lipworth, of the Vanderbuilt University Medical Center, pegged the findings on vulnerability and state of mind.
Women who choose to have the surgery may already have psychiatric disorders, including low self-esteem or issues with body image, they postulated.
