Houston Astros’ cold bats waste Kyle Tucker’s historic night

Tucker hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the second to give Houston an early 1-0 lead over the Philadelphia Phillies, and followed this up with a three-run blast the next inning that stretched their lead to 5-0. Unfortunately for the Astros, their bats went quiet shortly after, and the team wouldn’t score another run the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia got hot in the middle innings, tagging Houston ace Justin Verlander—who didn’t allow a hit through three frames—for three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to even the score. Neither team crossed the plate again until the top of the 10th inning, when J.T. Realmuto launched a leadoff solo shot into the right field seats to lift the Phillies to a 6-5 victory.

According to MLB.com, Tucker’s two long balls on Friday marked just the eighth multi-home run performance in World Series history. It was also the first time an Astros player had gone deep more than twice in a single game during the Fall Classic. Tucker finished 3-for-5 with four RBI, which fell one short of Alex Bregman’s franchise record for a World Series contest.

In addition to being held scoreless after jumping ahead 5-0, the Astros mustered just three hits in the fourth through ninth innings.

They seemed to string together a rally after falling behind in extra frames, with Bregman roping a one-out double off the left field wall. Tucker struck out in the next at-bat, but Yuli Gurriel walked to keep Houston’s hopes alive. Bregman and Gurriel proceeded to advance to third and second on a wild pitch by Philadelphia’s David Robertson. However, pinch hitter Aledmys Diaz grounded out to third to end the game.

Game 2 of the World Series is scheduled for Saturday with a 7:03 p.m. first pitch.
