The House Republican Conference on Thursday deleted a tweet taking aim at Jan. 6 select committee witness Sarah Matthews after receiving backlash on social media over its decision to go after the Republican staffer.

During the course of the prime-time hearing, the House Republican Conference, led by vocal Trump ally Rep. Elise Stefanik (NY), took to social media in an effort to delegitimize Matthews, who was previously deputy White House press secretary and resigned hours after the siege on the Capitol.

“Just another liar and pawn in Pelosi’s witch-hunt,” the House Republican Conference said in a quote tweet of Matthew’s 2021 post thanking the former president and Vice President Mike Pence for allowing her to serve.

The tweet was quickly met with scrutiny, with other former White House officials and GOP staffers coming to the defense of Matthews, who is currently communications director for Republicans on the House Select Committee on Climate Crisis.

“Hey geniuses, you realize this gives @SarahAMatthews1 more credibility? She’s there because she wanted to serve Trump. She believed in him like millions Americans. On 1/6 he let her & our entire country down,” former White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah Griffin tweeted.

Jeremy Adler, who is communications director for Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), a member of the Jan. 6 committee, also took aim at the tweet and called for an apology to be issued.

“Here’s the tweet from @EliseStefanik’s team attacking a fellow House Republican staffer that has since been deleted. Hopefully an apology to Sarah is forthcoming,” he said.

A House GOP conference spokesperson said the tweet was not authorized to be posted.

“The tweet was sent out at the staff level and was not authorized or the position of the conference and therefore was deleted,” the source said.
