Hollyoaks’ Brooke Hathaway struggles after Nancy’s exit from the village

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

In today’s (March 24) first-look episode, Brooke Hathaway visibly struggled following Nancy Osborne’s exit from the village.

In last night’s E4 episode, Nancy left for the US to explore the opportunity of life-changing surgery for baby Morgan, bidding a tearful goodbye to her family outside of the hospital.

Just before she left, she instructed Brooke to take care of the family whilst she was away.

Despite being given the responsibility, Brooke quickly realised that they would face opposition to their newfound position of authority, with both Charlie and Oscar testing their patience.

With Charlie bragging that he would “engage” with video games instead of schoolwork, Brooke won the first battle by hiding them. They then were conned by Oscar, who feigned illness in order to get out of school.

Feeling that they’d got off to a good start, Darren burst Brooke’s bubble by disclosing that Oscar was faking his illness and Charlie had already sneaked out.

Attempting to get over their disappointment, Brooke spiralled as they burnt the food in the oven, setting off the smoke alarm and leaving them stressed on the floor after suffering a sensory overload.

Thankfully, Lizzie came to the rescue just in time, clearing the smoke and consoling Brooke during the incident.

She subsequently eased Brooke’s worries by revealing it was not their responsibility to care for everybody despite Nancy’s wish, and Darren insisted they had nothing to be ashamed of.

He likened Nancy to a “serene swan” and himself to an “upside-down pigeon”, reassuring Brooke that struggle is a natural part of growth.

Elsewhere in the episode, Tony worried about Diane’s safety to the extent that he was accused of being paranoid by several residents. Despite his crazed outlook, his fears may be justified after it was revealed that a hooded figure was vandalising The Dog.
