HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Britton Deerfield football falls to Holgate, Addison wins

BRITTON — Britton Deerfield made a valiant effort to get back into Friday’s game against Holgate (Ohio), but it wasn’t enough, as the Patriots football team fell 48-26.

BD (0-2) trailed 28-6 at the half, but opened the third quarter with a three-and-out and then Caden Kubacki found Carson Johnson for a 35-yard touchdown pass on third and 21 to make it a 28-12 game with 8:19 left in the third.

The Patriots recovered an onside kick and on fourth and six Kubacki threw a 46-yard touchdown to Aden Anspach, but an illegal block brought it back, though it was still enough for a first down. Jayden Brooks scored from seven yards out a few plays later to make it 28-18 with 6:06 in the third. Brooks finished with 71 yards rushing and the touchdown.

BD elected to kick the ball away this time and brought down Holgate deep in its own territory, but the Tigers responded with a long drive into the fourth ending with a touchdown to go up 36-18 with 10:26 to go. Holgate added another touchdown to go up 42-18 before Caden Freeman returned a kick to the 6-yard line where Jeremiah Bishop scored to bring the game to its final.

Kubacki also scored the touchdown in the first half on a one-yard run. The sophomore replaced junior Keegan Bush under center who left the game with an injury and was 7-of-17 passing for 147 yards and a touchdown while throwing two interceptions.

Leland Smith caught five passes for 132 yards.

Addison 62, East Jackson 27

JACKSON — The Panthers improved to 2-0 with a Cascades Conference crossover victory against the Trojans.

Addison hasn’t lost to East Jackson since 1991.

The Panthers led 46-13 at the half with Spencer Brown rushing for more than 100 yards in the first half.

Lenawee Christian at Temperance Bedford Summer Classic

TEMPERANCE — The Cougars 1-3 at the Bedford Summer Classic, beating Allen Park while falling to Bedford, Plymouth Christian and Bronson.

LCS lost 25-14, 25-11 to the host Kicking Mules and 25-11, 25-18 to Plymouth Christian before getting a win against Allen Park, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17.

The Cougars made the quarterfinal and lost to Bronson, 25-17, 13-25, 15-12.

CROSS COUNTRY

Tecumseh at Downriver Watermelon Run

TRENTON — Tecumseh traveled to the Downriver Watermelon run and had two top-10 runners.

Madison Morris took fourth in the girls race with a time of 20:28.3. Payton Scheffler of Brownstown Woodhaven won with a time of 19:36.7.

In the boys race, Grant Fahle took seventh with a time of 17:55.0. Logan Ruffer of Riverview won with a time of 16:08.1.
