When voters in the third ward of Bucyrus head to the polls on Nov. 7, they will have two candidates to choose from, including a write-in.

Newcomer Zyan Hickman, a Republican, has thrown his hat into the ring seeking to take over the position held by Terry Spiegel.

Running as a write-in candidate is Barb Huber, a registered Republican, retired teacher and member of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary.

“I decided to run because of the state our current mayor has put our city in. We need to turn it around,” said Hickman, who was the salutatorian when he graduated from Wayside Christian School. Hickman said the city needs to cut down on regulations and allow tax credits for new and existing businesses.

“Our goal should be to support existing businesses while also working hard to bring new businesses into the city. People need well-paying jobs, and the city needs the tax revenue,” said Hickman.

Zyan Hickman, a Republican, is seeking the third ward seat on Bucyrus City Council.

To combat the housing crisis facing Bucyrus residents, Hickman would like to see landlords held accountable for houses that are not up to code.

“We also need to apply for grants and make necessary changes to the budget to keep the city in the black,” said Hickman.

“I’m running for council because I have had a wonderful quality of life in the Bucyrus community,” said Huber, “and I want to pay it forward by using my lifetime of experiences to serve the community.”

Huber said council needs to make wise decisions that will bring jobs to the city. She said the city needs affordable housing to attract workers.

To bring in more money for the city and projects that need to be completed, Huber wants to see the city apply for more grants.

Barb Huber is a Republican who’s running as a write-in candidate for the Bucyrus City Council third ward seat.

“We need to apply for every grant opportunity available to us,” said Huber.

Huber said she feels strongly about the council and the community working together to make Bucyrus a place where other people want to live. Her platform is, “Governing today with an eye toward the future.”

“I was amazed at Spooktacular on Saturday that even in the rain over 500 children and their parents came out to Aumiller Park to experience what our community can do when we all work together,” said Huber.
