Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Rhys Williams has spoken highly of Billy Koumetio, claiming that he’s going to continue improving.

Koumetio has had something of a breakout year at Anfield, earning his first-team debut in the Champions League alongside Williams against Midtjylland earlier this month.

The 18-year-old hasn’t been seen in the first-team since, but Williams believes that he’s going to continue improving as he matures.

“I’ve not played with Billy that much, I’ve trained with him a few times. His aerial presence and his physical presence, he’s only going to get better with age and the more opportunity he gets to play,” Williams said.

“I felt like I needed to be his Virg in a way and keep talking to him. Our backs were against the wall at times in that second half but he made a few great tackles and a good few headers. That will only help his confidence.”

Williams and Koumetio are still only teenagers, but it’s good to hear that Williams has such a high opinion of his teammate.

These two could feasibly be centre-back partners for the best part of the next decade, especially if Koumetio does improve as Williams tipped him to.

Of course, if he is going to become a starter at Anfield he will need to mature quite a lot, the fact that Williams, who is only one year older than him, took the reins as the vocal leader in the Champions League shows that he’s perhaps lacking in that areas, but that is something that comes with experience.

Either way, the future looks bright for Liverpool at centre-half, Koumetio and Williams are coming through as teenagers, while Joe Gomez and Nat Phillips still have years ahead of them.
