“He’s due”: Cornes calls on Cameron to return to form in a big way against Magpies

Kane Cornes has called on Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron to return to form in a big way against Collingwood on Friday night.

After starting the season as perhaps the most in-form player in the competition, Cameron’s form has dropped off in his last nine games as he has kicked just 12 goals across that period.

Cameron hasn’t kicked more than three goals in a game since Round 6 and Cornes says the 30-year-old has been MIA.

While he’s had some injury disruptions this season, Cornes believes Cameron is due for a big performance and he thinks he may need to produce it for the Cats to win Friday’s crunch clash.

“I don’t know if this guy’s injured, but once again, we can’t judge that clearly,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.

“He’s had some disruptions, but I’m putting Jeremy Cameron in the gun.

“I want to see an all-time performance tonight, because he’s due.

“34 snags in his first nine games of the season, but only 12 in his last nine. He’s been MIA, missing in action.

“I looked at the matchup that he had against Port Adelaide and through, ‘He’s going to kick six or seven’, because it was Ryan Burton. But he kicked two.

“He has just not been able to get it done for whatever reason, Jeremy Cameron.”

While Cameron hasn’t been operating at peak fitness, Cornes refused to give the superstar an out as plenty rests on his shoulders against Collingwood with Tom Hawkins sidelined with a hamstring injury.

“He had a head knock, he was headbutted in a pub, I get all of the that,” Cornes said.

“I get the disruption that he’s had to the season, but I don’t care. You’re on a million bucks a year.

“Your team needs an all-time performance. Tom Hawkins isn’t there, I’m putting him (Cameron) in the gun this week.”

While he was held to just two goals in the Round 1 loss to Collingwood, Cameron enjoys playing against the Magpies as he booted nine majors against Craig McRae’s side across two games last season.

The bounce for Friday’s big game between this year’s top team and last seasons’s premiers is set for 7:50pm AEST.
