Here’s why Valentine’s roses cost more this year

With Valentine’s Day coming up, customers turn to florists to provide classic gifts for their partners: roses.

But this year, the rose bouquets will take more from your wallet than usual.

At Kathryn’s Flower & Gift Shop in Lynchburg, it’s a hectic time of year, and in 2023 the prices for flowers went up to make ends meet.

Owner Jennifer Mata said the shipping costs for flowers have gone up too far and she had to hike her prices.

“It’s part of inflation. I know the costs trickle down. It’s not just us that’s struggling it’s everybody,” she said.

A dozen roses have cost an increasing sum of money over the past years, from around $80 in 2021 to nearly $100 this year. But even with the risen price, Mata expects business to be booming with more than 250 orders.

One way customers can help local florists is to order straight from them rather than a third party. Mata said those third parties will charge more money for that classic Valentine’s gift.

Mata said ultimately prices for the flowers are high because of how much unseen work goes in behind the scenes.

“They don’t know what’s it like to get flowers in a box, and cut every stem and put them in water and make sure they are refrigerated and design the arranged to get them out to you’re loved one,” she said.
