Kalen DeBoer’s hire as Alabama’s head coach is official. Now, Nick Saban’s successor’s introduction to Tuscaloosa is scheduled.
DeBoer will speak with media at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The press conference comes after the coach’s scheduled arrival in Tuscaloosa Friday evening.
ESPN reported that after DeBoer lands, the Crimson Tide is scheduled for a team meeting at its facility. Players are currently allowed to enter the transfer portal, having received a 30-day extra window for undergraduate entry when Saban retired.
The man who won six national titles with the Crimson Tide, plus another at LSU, announced his retirement on Wednesday. After a search, Greg Byrne landed on Washington head coach DeBoer as his replacement.
“I have always had an incredible respect for Alabama football and its commitment to excellence,” DeBoer said in a statement released Friday evening. “The tradition-rich history of this program is unmatched across the landscape of college athletics, and I look forward to continuing that moving forward. Following Coach Saban is an honor. He has been the standard for college football, and his success is unprecedented.”
DeBoer led the Huskies to a national championship appearance last season. Washington rolled through the regular season before winning the Pac-12 championship game and defeating Texas in the Sugar Bowl, before dropping the title game to Michigan.
The first game of the DeBoer era at Alabama is scheduled for Aug. 31 at Bryant-Denny Stadium against Western Kentucky.
