Here’s how Sesame Street’s adored Elmo sparked an internet trauma dump

No one was expecting Elmo, Sesame Street’s beloved red muppet, to check in and ask how things are going.

And Elmo probably wasn’t expecting some of the responses he received on X (formerly Twitter) after checking in on the platform’s users.

Elmo posted on his account Monday, “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”

The furry, red monster received some shocking replies.

Users addressed financial struggles amid the current economy, existential crises, battle with mental and physical health issues and much more.

“Every morning, I cannot wait to go back to sleep. Every Monday, I cannot wait for Friday to come. Every single day and every single week for life,” @ContrarianGuild replied.

Ritz Crackers replied, “maybe it’s best if u save this question for a different time.”

Domino’s Pizza UK’s account posted a chaotic kitchen photo depicting a fiery blaze of pizza and pandemonium.

A few celebrities, like Rainn Wilson and Dr. Phil, and popular brands, like Chipotle and mobile game Among Us, chimed in.

Contrary to many of the dejected responses, Grammy-winning musician Chance The Rapper told Elmo he’s “in a really good place” right now.

The X post also prompted the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline to drop a message about their services and how to contact the helpline.

One user summed up the feedback by saying they “did not have us all trauma dumping on elmo” on their bingo card.

Whether it’s pondering life’s meaning, battling mental or physical health issues, keeping a business afloat or doing “really good,” X’s population definitely gave Elmo more than he bargained for.

Sesame Street’s endearing character Elmo responded to the thousands of replies with a heartwarming message on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

“Wow! Elmo is glad he asked! Elmo learned that it is important to ask a friend how they are doing. Elmo will check in again soon, friends! Elmo loves you. #EmotionalWellBeing,” he said.

For what it’s worth, it’s good to know that an old friend still cares. Thanks, Elmo.
