Henry Cavill’s shocking axe as Superman has sparked widespread anger from fans, with some wondering if it could mean he could return to The Witcher despite being replaced by Liam Hemsworth.

Two months after making a surprise cameo in Dwayne Johnson’s superhero movie Black Adam as Superman, Henry confirmed in a new statement that he will not be returning as the Man of Steel.

Sharing the announcement on social media, the actor wrote: ‘I have just had a meeting with [new DC Studios bosses] James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.

‘After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that.’

The 39-year-old wished the new DC Studios bosses ‘the best of luck’ with their ‘new ‘universe to build’, before thanking fans for their support.

‘For those who have been by my side through the years we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around,’ he said. ‘Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will.’

The news of Henry’s departure as Superman has come shortly after it was revealed that from season four of The Witcher, he’s to be replaced in the lead role by Hunger Games star Liam.

The Mission Impossible star is still due to make one final outing in the third season, having written in a statement published in October: ‘My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.’

However, there are some who have pondered whether he could retract his decision to quit considering his journey as Superman has come to an end.

‘Get back to The Witcher mate,’ one person commented on Instagram, while another person wrote: ‘I guessing you will be returning to the Witcher then? I hope so at least.’

‘Sad news Henry, but gracious as ever 🙏 any chance you’ll go back to Geralt instead?’ another asked.

While speaking at the premiere of The Witcher: Blood Origin in London this week, The Witcher star Joey Batey said it was ‘gutting’ when Henry left the series as Geralt.

However, he added that Liam was already ‘throwing himself into’ the lead role, quoting the books and demonstrating how passionate he is about the project.

The Witcher is available to watch on Netflix.
