Heartstopper: Nick and Charlie’s most swoon-worthy moments, ranked

Heartstopper season two spoilers follow.

Whether you’re on your first, second or third watch of the latest season of Heartstopper, its release on Netflix has given us a fresh batch of wholesome Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) scenes to pour over.

Based on Alice Oseman’s webcomic series, the love story between the rugby star and introverted drummer continues to serve up back-to-back syrupy sweet moments as they navigate life at school as a couple.

Although this is a Charlie and Nick-centric ranking, there’s a bundle of other adorable moments among their close-knit friendship group, between Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao (William Gao) as well as Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) – not to mention their teachers Mr Farouk (Nima Taleghani) and Mr Ayayi (Fisayo Akinade).

But if we started to compile the best moments across the show, the list might become a bit more unruly – or just feature every single scene in the second season. So here is every single moment between Charlie and Nick that were real heart-stoppers.

In the first episode of the season, Charlie encourages and supports Nick to come out as bisexual to those around him, but he struggles to find the right moment to tell his close friend Imogen (Rhea Norwood).

That is until the gang has a sleepover at Charlie’s house – when Imogen tells him she had already just about figured out they were seeing each other.

Later that night, as they’re all camping out on the floor in Charlie’s living room together, Charlie and Nick are lying head-to-head and messaging one another.

Smiling at their screens and sneaking looks at one another, Nick tells Charlie the good news and plenty of heart emojis ensue, before they hold hands and go to sleep.

After dubbing themselves “tragic star-crossed lovers” because their parents want them to get their heads down and focus on their upcoming exams, Nick and Charlie organise a clandestine day out together at the park.

Nick sweetly offers Charlie protection against the elements with his hoodie, before he bounds off to play with a buoyant Nellie. Charlie sits watching on to take adorable snaps destined for his Instagram feed.

When Charlie comes back, he successfully distracts Nick from his exam stresses with a giddy picnic blanket kiss.

6. Nick tells his dad

There is no part of us that feels envious of those at this dinner party in the seventh episode, even if Nick and Charlie are there. Nick’s mum (Olivia Colman) invites Charlie’s parents over to get to know each other better, but Nick’s dad is over from France and slightly usurps the evening.

He’s going on to Nick about how attractive rugby is to women and quizzing the boys on whether they have girlfriends. Meanwhile, Nick’s unlikeable brother David is making snide comments.

Finally, Nick decides to intervene, saying: “This is ridiculous. Dad, Charlie’s my boyfriend. Surprise. I’m bi. He’s gay. And I was actually really stressed out about how I was going to tell you. But I don’t care what you think about it anymore because you don’t care to even see us more than two times a year.”

He concludes: “I like who I am. I like my life,” and leaves the table, followed closely by Charlie.

Cooling off outside, Charlie checks in on how he is. “I didn’t mean for it to happen that way, but it felt good to say it,” Nick says and Charlie envelopes him in a massive hug.

5. Charlie stands up for Nick

After everyone has had a bit too much to drink, a party in the woods to celebrate the end of exam season starts to go awry. Amidst this, Nick tries to talk with his rugby mates about his sexuality – when Harry (Cormac Hyde-Corrin) appears and tells him to “spit it out”.

Nick’s thoughts start to spiral to worse-case scenarios of what people will think and say when they find out – when Charlie suddenly appears like a knight in skinny jeans. “Nick doesn’t want to talk to you, Harry. Piss off,” he tells him.

Nick tells him he’s feeling ill and Charlie takes him home for a much-needed cup of tea.

4. Hickey-gate

Finally, the Paris episodes. All the boys are thrown in a room together and when Nick and Charlie finally get a moment alone, we get a classic “Hi,” “Hi” exchange. One thing quickly leads to another as the pair make the most of their time by themselves.

Then, Nick starts kissing Charlie’s neck as little graphic flowers explode across the screen. Fears of getting caught stop them from going any further as Charlie teases Nick for losing the no-kissing challenge.

Then, lo and behold the following day as Charlie is brushing his teeth, he spots a flaming red hickey on his neck in the mirror.

We love a montage, especially when it’s set to Wolf Alice. The Truham and Higgs gang tick off everything – the Notre Dame, the Shakespeare and Co. bookshop, the Umbrella Sky Project.

And it’s while they’re walking there underneath the rainbow-coloured umbrella display that Nick and Charlie walk past a same-sex couple with their arms around each other. The two teens watch them go and then look at each other smiling, full of the possibility that they could one day be that open about their relationship, and hold hands.

Nick finally gets in touch with his father in France and impresses Charlie with his fluency in the language of love.

“Mon amour,” he tells him as they end up play fighting – to the chagrin of a nearby museum security guard. They run off through the corridors of the historic museum and stop for breath at a vantage point.

As Nick confides in him about his lacklustre relationship with his dad, they promise to tell each other when things are bothering them. After a sweet hug, Nick invites Charlie out for a coffee to meet his dad. And they’re off on a giddy run again.

The final scene of the second season is certainly worth the wait. After the thrills of their night at prom have started to soften, Charlie retreats with Nick to his bedroom to talk.

Nick has had an inkling for a while now that Charlie had not been telling him everything about the bullying he suffered when he was outed at school, but is moved to tears when he now tells him the extent of what he went through.

As they then agree to be completely honest with one another, Nick even comes close to telling Charlie he loves him. But we’ll have to wait for season three for that.

The finale scene has everything we cherish about Heartstopper: love, understanding and unbridled joy.
