Hawaii’s housing shortage, Japan’s stable housing model topic of July event

As Hawaii faces a housing shortage, some officials look to Japan’s housing policies for possible solutions.

Tobias Peter, assistant director of the AEI Housing Center, based at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., will share his knowledge about the “Tokyo model” of housing on July 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

Hosted by Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, Peter will explain why Tokyo’s zoning regulations, which are much more liberal than those of Hawaii, are key.

Peter has researched Hawaii’s regulatory barriers to housing and will compare them with the policies that have basically stabilized home prices in Tokyo, the world’s most populated city.

Grassroot Institute executive vice president Joe Kent will moderate the presentation and field questions from the audience during the Q&A sessions.

Admission is $10 via eventbrite.com and includes parking. Space is limited, so early reservations are encouraged.
