Harry and Meghan to travel to Balmoral amid concerns over Queen’s health

Harry and Meghan have cancelled their engagements and will travel to Balmoral to be with the Royal Family after the Queen was put under medical supervision by her doctors on Thursday.

The Sussexes were on their first tour of the UK and since they quit the Royal Family in 2019 and moved to California.

The pair were due to attend the WellChild Awards, a charity that supports seriously ill children that the Duke of Sussex has been a patron of since 2007.

A spokesperson for the couple said on Thursday afternoon: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be travelling to Scotland.”

Prior to the news of the Queen’s poor health, it was not thought Harry would see any of his family while in the UK.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement at 12.30pm on Thursday saying royal doctors were concerned for health.

They said the head of state was comfortable and her royal physicians recommended she remain under medical supervision, as the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cornwall cleared their diaries and immediately headed to the Queen’s home in the Scottish Highlands.

The monarch, 96, pulled out of a virtual Privy Council on Wednesday, a day after appointing Liz Truss as PM at Balmoral Castle.

A Palace spokesperson said: “Following further evaluation this morning, the Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.

“The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been in Europe since the start of the week, with Meghan making a speech at the One Young World summit in Manchester on Monday.

The pair also travelled to Dusseldorf in Germany on Tuesday, to mark the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games in the city, and thrilled fans when they went on a walkabout.

The news of the Queen’s illness broke while prime minister Liz Truss was revealing her plan to deal with the energy crisis in the House of Commons.

But while the debate was taking place, Truss, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and other prominent politicians left the chamber.

The speaker of the Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle interrupted the debate to say: “I’m sure on behalf of all colleagues that we’re saddened to hear the announcement that has been made, and the thoughts and prayers of all of us will be with Her Majesty the Queen and indeed with the Royal Family.”
