Harriet Harman, the Solicitor General, was stopped by police for speeding on a motorway, the Attorney General’s Office said.

The MP for Camberwell and Peckham was allegedly travelling at 99mph in a 70mph zone on the M4 in Wiltshire yesterday, a spokeswoman said.

She intended to plead guilty to the charge at the “first available opportunity”, the spokeswoman added.

The spokeswoman said: “Harriet Harman MP, the Solicitor General, was stopped for speeding on the M4 motorway in Wiltshire.

“Ms Harman’s speed when stopped was recorded as 99mph in a 70mph zone.

“Harriet Harman is very sorry that she exceeded the speed limit.

“She fully recognises that she should have paid more attention to the speed at which she was travelling.

“She intends to plead guilty to the speeding offence at the first available opportunity.”

The spokeswoman said Ms Harman had not yet been given any information by police about a date for a court appearance.

The MP had been taking her son back to university in Bristol after the Christmas break.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “Harriet Harman said she is sorry and made clear she intends to plead guilty.”

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said the driving conditions on the M4 yesterday morning were good and there was no snow until later in the day.

He said one of the force’s specialist traffic units would have stopped Ms Harman as there were no routine patrols on the motorway.
