Happy Pi Day, the number that is!

Happy Pi #HappyPi

It might be the most exciting reason to celebrate and dig into any festive sweet or savory dessert that has a pie-shape look, as today is Pi Day, March 14.

According to NationalCalendarDay.com, the holiday blends a realm of both mathematics and gastronomy. This date, 3/14, mirrors the first three significant digits of pi (π) – 3.14, an infinite number pivotal in calculating the circumference of a circle.

Even thought Pi Day is most know for sweet treats, it also serves as an educational purpose. The Greek letter π, came about in the mid-18th century and the word “pi” itself actually was the first letter of the Greek word perimetros. That is then broken down to circumference.

As time on and many decades, a physicist by the name of Larry Shaw decided to have a bit of fun with the numbers and the day itself in 1988, and came up with the well-known math formula we all know. The mathematical formula is π=Circumference/Diameter, as it is a ratio and is obtained from a circle. Another fun fact about this day is that it honors Albert Einstein’s birthday, who was born in 1879.

Other than being known for a enthusiastic day for mathematicians, food euthenics will also be able to join in on the fun for a few well-known locations here in Eastern North Carolina.
