Happy New Year! New York among the latest to welcome 2023 as celebrations continue around the world

Two New York City police officers have been rushed to hospital after they were attacked by a man wielding a machete near the crowd who had gathered to watch the New Year celebrations at Times Square.

A third officer shot the attacker in the shoulder, officials said.

One of the hospitalised officers had a fractured skull and the other a bad cut, but both were expected to recover.

The 19-year-old suspect has been taken into custody and was also expected to recover.
