‘Happy ending’: Dog at Humboldt County shelter reunited with Del Norte family after a month

Dec. 19—A dog found roaming around at Hiller Park in McKinleyville was reunited with this family a few days ago at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter, where he has been staying for a little more than a month.

The dog the shelter called Cosmo turned out to be the family’s Kujo.

“We love happy endings and that’s what happened today when Cosmo (Kujo) was adopted back to his original family,” the county shelter posted on Facebook on Friday.

Kujo did not have a microchip or any identification when he was found so he was placed in the shelter. And no owners reached out for more than a month.

“We were contacted by a family from Del Norte County who believed that he was their missing dog, Kujo,” the post stated. “They came to the shelter and it was confirmed that he was their dog. He had gone missing in Del Norte County a month ago and they were looking there for him not expecting to locate him in Humboldt.”

Kujo and his family are now happily reunited.

The shelter urged pet owners to microchip pets as the best way to identify pets who are lost. Tags are also good, but they can get lost as well.

The shelter also urged residents not to move found pets.

“If you find a stray animal do not remove it from the area/County where it was found,” the post stated. “Owners expect to locate their pet in the area where it went missing, not hundreds of miles away.”

This week, in an effort to home many of the animals living at the shelter, adoption fees are reduced to $35 through Dec. 23. Call the shelter at 707-840-9132 to schedule an appointment to see our adoptable pets.
