Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated with much enthusiasm by Muslims around the world. It seals an end to the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, during which people fast from dawn to dusk. The tenth month in the Islamic calendar is Shawwal. The first day of this month is celebrated as Eid-ul-Fitr across the world.

The sighting of the moon differs from country to country by about a day as the Islamic calendar is lunar, and lunar months are shorter than solar months. In India, Eid is usually celebrated a day after sighting the crescent moon in Saudi Arabia. This year, Eid will be celebrated on May 14.

The Jeddah Astronomical Association has reported that the sighting of the Shawwal crescent will most likely happen on May 12 (Wednesday).

The day is marked with wearing new clothes, meeting friends and family, and relishing delicious food. On seeing the moon, people wish each other Eid Mubarak.
