Harold R. Mayer celebrated his 99th birthday on May 24. His family and friends wanted to mark the occasion because he was an Artillery Captain in the 99th Infantry during WWII  from 1943-1946 surviving the Battle of the Bulge and was there till the end, even freeing some of his own battalion from a POW camp who were captured from a house where he was staying in the same night. He returned to Texas A&M and finished his degree in petroleum engineering in 1947 (class of 1944), and began working for Gulf Oil. He later was called back to fight in Korea from 1952-1953, then resumed his career with Gulf Oil eventually ending up in Jackson in 1959, with his wife Marie, son Mike and daughter Pam and decided that was the end of transfers, starting his own business and then later working with some others but not leaving the Jackson area again.
