A Halton police officer is under investigation after shooting a man late this afternoon (Sept. 12) in Hamilton who was suspected to have shot and killed a Toronto Police officer a couple of hours earlier in Mississauga.

Halton Regional Police were in Hamilton along with officers from other law enforcement agencies looking for the suspected gunman they believe shot to death the officer at about 2:15 p.m. at a Tim Hortons in the Meadowvale area of Mississauga.

The Toronto officer was reportedly taking part in an unspecified training course, believed to be a motorcycle course, in Mississauga today. The officers broke for lunch and the victim went to the Tim Hortons.

While there, he was fatally shot by an unidentified gunman who then fled the scene in a black Jeep Cherokee. Another man was also shot, and he remains in hospital.

The shooting kicked off a manhunt across the GTA with Peel, Halton, Toronto and Hamilton police officers all involved.

After the Mississauga shooting, the gunman reportedly turned up in Milton, where he was involved in another fatal shooting. One person was killed and two others injured in that incident, which took place at an auto body shop on Bronte Rd. S., near Main St.

The subsequent pursuit of the suspect led officers with several police agencies into Hamilton, where the shooting of the suspect during his arrest took place on York Blvd. at around 4 p.m.

The suspect’s condition wasn’t immediately known.

The Special Investigations Unit, the provincial agency that probes any interaction with police where someone is hurt of killed, is now looking into the matter.
