Halftime analysis: Mistake-prone Lions cough up yet another big lead against Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Detroit Lions sprinted to a double-digit lead in the first game of the season. They gave it away. Then the Detroit Lions sprinted to another double-digit lead in the second game of the season.

They’ve already given away that one too, due to another comedy of errors.

Matthew Stafford took a bad sack that backed up Detroit’s offense late in the first half of Sunday’s game against Green Bay. Then guard Oday Aboushi was flagged for holding on third down. Then Jack Fox uncorked a beautiful punt, only to watch safety Will Harris give 30 yards of it back on back-to-back personal fouls for unnecessary roughness and a horsecollar.

Aaron Rodgers doesn’t need help, but the Lions were more than happy to give it to him. And Rodgers didn’t disappoint, finding ex-Lions tight end Robert Tonyan for a 11-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in the half — as a flag laid on the field for an off-the-ball penalty by Detroit.

You can’t make this stuff up.

So after sprinting to a 14-3 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run from Kerryon Johnson and a 4-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones, the Lions find themselves down 17-14 at the break. This is actually the first time they’ve trailed Green Bay in a game since Oct. 7, 2018.

Of course, the Lions were also swept by Green Bay last year after coughing up a 13-0 lead in the first game and a 14-0 lead in the second game. Detroit lost both at the buzzer. And now it has coughed up yet another big lead, after doing the same against Chicago last week.

There’s still time to salvage this one. But, yikes.
