Haley likely to get hammered in Michigan, Emerson polling shows

Unless former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley can perform some sort of electoral miracle, she will likely end Tuesday down yet another state in her race against former President Donald Trump, according to polling.

A Emerson College Polling/The Hill poll released Monday shows the former South Carolina governor trailing her former boss by more than 50 points ahead of Michigan’s Republican primary.

“Before (next) Tuesday’s primary, 69% of Republican primary voters plan to support Donald Trump, 20% Nikki Haley, and 11% are undecided. When the 11% of undecided voters are asked which candidate they lean towards, Trump’s support increases to 76%, and Haley to 24%,” pollsters wrote.

A loss in Michigan will mark the sixth straight primary race where Haley has failed to come within single digits of the 45th President, let alone anywhere close to beating him. On Saturday, she lost her home state of South Carolina by about 20 points.

Despite her poor poll numbers, the former diplomat was in the Great Lakes State on Monday in an attempt to gather however many voters — and the potential delegates that go with them — to her side of the argument and away from the Trump-train as is possible.

“Under his watch we went eight of our $34 trillion in debt in four years under him, more than any other president. He said nothing about fiscal responsibility, he said nothing about cutting spending, he said nothing about reducing the size of government. He’s taken that completely off the table, and we see Republicans and Democrats wasting money,” she told Fox News.

Emerson pollsters also questioned Michigan voters over the general election preferences during a theoretical rematch between President Joe Biden and Trump and, though they noted the president has gained three points while his Republican counterpart has slipped downward a notch, according to the survey Trump will win the state in November.

About 46% of polled Michigan voters said they’ll cast a ballot for Trump this fall, compared to 44% for Biden, with 10% percent telling pollsters they are still somehow undecided about a second matchup between the two men.

There were some interesting findings in the poll, not the least of which is that independents, a voting block either candidate needs to sway in order to win, pick Trump over Biden in the key-battleground-state.

“Michigan’s independent voters break for Trump over Biden 43% to 37%.” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said with the poll’s release. “Male voters in Michigan break for Trump by twelve points, 53% to 41%, whereas women voters break for Biden by five, 46% to 41%.”

“Voters who say the economy is the top issue facing Michigan break for Trump over Biden, 56% to 33%, along with immigration 86% to 7%,” Kimball said. “Those who say threats to democracy break for Biden 76% to 19%.”
