Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 hasn’t spent a lot of time on the love triangle between Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), and Cormac “McWidow” Hayes (Richard Flood) — but for good reason.

The new season has been dealing with a number of heavy topics. Now, some fans are wondering whether Meredith and DeLuca even make it out of the season alive. But if both characters make it through, what are the chances the couple will get their happily ever after? Ahead of the Grey’s Anatomy spring premiere, Gianniotti opened up about Meredith and DeLuca’s future together.

Meredith and DeLuca weren’t together at the start of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17. But it was clear that Meredith still cared for her ex. Throughout the last season, DeLuca dealt with his mental health. Then he received an official bipolar disorder diagnosis. Meredith stood by DeLuca’s side.

That said, Grey’s Anatomy also highlighted Meredith’s growing relationship with Hayes. The new peds surgeon was a “gift” from the one and only Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). But the flirtation stopped when Meredith fainted amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the season premiere. Then in the next episode, viewers learned that Meredith caught COVID-19.

As Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 progressed, viewers became increasingly concerned for Meredith’s life. The character went in and out of consciousness, where she reunited with Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) in a dream sequence. But even so, Meredith was put on a ventilator as a last resort in the midseason finale. Now, many viewers are wondering whether Meredith will be killed off the show.

Meanwhile, many Grey’s Anatomy fans are also worried about DeLuca after the midseason finale. In the episode, DeLuca noticed Opal, the woman suspected of sex trafficking, at Grey Sloan Memorial. Now, DeLuca and Carina (Stefania Spampinato) will track Opal in the Station 19 Season 4 crossover event. This also puts both surgeons in danger. So some viewers are wondering whether DeLuca might die.

As things stand, many Grey’s Anatomy fans are worried about Meredith and DeLuca — but for entirely different reasons. That said, some viewers are hopeful both characters will make it through their respective challenges and eventually reunite.

Before Meredith was put on a ventilator in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, she shared a sweet moment with DeLuca. At first, he simply shared an update on Meredith’s patients while checking on her stats. Then DeLuca told Meredith, “It’s really good to hear your voice.”

The scene left many Grey’s Anatomy fans wondering whether there were lingering feelings. But as mentioned, there’s a lot more going on now. That said, Gianniotti recently shared what needs to happen between DeLuca and Meredith before they get back together.

“If [DeLuca] is to repair his relationship with Meredith — there are a lot of wrongs to make right — he must first save her life,” Gianniotti said, per TV Insider. “Saving her life is the miracle all the doctors need.”

Then in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gianniotti hinted that DeLuca still cares deeply about Meredith.

“Right now he’s just concerned on saving this woman he loves and who, at the very least, is a best friend,” the actor said. “There’s a lot of obstacles in the way at the moment. But that doesn’t mean that it could clear a path in the future for them to be endgame.”

Whatever happens — or doesn’t happen — between Meredith and DeLuca, it seems the second half of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 is going to be an emotional ride. So get ready.
