Grayson Sherrill, Capitol Rioter Seen in ‘Keep America Great’ Top, Gets Turned In by His Own Family

A North Carolina man has been arrested in connection with the Capitol riot after being reported by members of his own family.
Grayson Sherrill, of Cherryville, has been charged with knowingly entering and remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; knowingly engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted area; and violent and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds in connection to the January 6 attack.

The FBI released photos of Sherrill as part of a public appeal to identify those who stormed the building.
The wanted posters revealed a suspect wearing a red “Keep America Great” hooded top, jeans and dark-colored combat-style boots. He was carrying a long, cylindrical-shaped object, around two to three feet long in his left hand.
According to a criminal complaint, members of Sherrill’s family identified him from images and news reports of the attack on the Capitol and turned him in.
One family member told law enforcement that Sherrill’s father texted another family member a picture of Sherrill inside the Capitol.
They also gave the FBI a picture of Sherrill standing next to a statue of Dwight D. Eisenhower, which is located inside of the Rotunda of the Capitol building. A similar picture of Sherrill can also be found on the Getty Images website.
The family member said they typically see the suspect around once a year.
A second family member also told law enforcement that the suspect’s father had sent them a screenshot of a news channel’s report of the attack showing Sherrill inside the Capitol on January 6 and that he had traveled to Washington, D.C.
Sherrill appeared in federal court in Charlotte on Monday to face the charges. He was ordered by U.S. Magistrate Judge David Keesler to report to U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., where the rest of the Capitol attack cases are being prosecuted.
In January, FBI Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Steven M. D’Antuono warned those who took part in the Capitol attack that their own friends and family were turning them in.
“To those of you who took part in the violence, here’s something you should know: Every FBI field office in the country is looking for you,” D’Antuono said while giving an update on the investigation.
“As a matter of fact, even your friends and family are tipping us off. So you might want to consider turning yourself in instead of wondering when we’re going to come knocking on your door—because we will.”
