Shelby County mayor Lee Harris and the Shelby County Office of Innovation held a breakfast for kids and their grandparents at the Botanic Gardens over the weekend.
This was to promote youth literacy this holiday season. The event included a pancake breakfast, face painting and a special visit from Santa.
All of these features were organized to encourage grandparents to read to kids and help foster a love for books
“We have our challenges, but you can see all around us — our potential,” mayor Lee Harris said. “If we’re going to tap into our potential, it’s going to take all of us.”
The Office of Innovation also launched a book last month to promote literacy, and attendees of the breakfast-themed event received a free copy.
“It’s going to take the family and the household and these grandparents all getting engaged,” Harris said at the event. “It’s going to take these kinds of activities.”
