Harry Styles capped the 65th annual Grammy Awards with a somewhat surprising Album of the Year win for Harry House, wrapping a night that was most memorable for seeing a cherished record fall.

Beyoncé came into the Trevor Noah-hosted ceremony in Los Angeles with a leading nine nominations, tying her spouse Jay-Z as the most-nominated act of all time with 88 — and tonight she set the big record. The Queen of Pop became the all-time leader in career Grammys, winning won twice tonight and twice during the preshow. After breaking her tie with Quincy Jones for second place at 28, she got a 32nd career Grammy, topping the late conductor Georg Solti, who scored his 31st statuette in 1999.

Beyoncé had followed with her two preshow wins with primetime nods for Best R&B Song (“Cuff It”) and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album (Renaissance). She was, however, shut out in the three marquee categories despite being nominated for each.

Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” took Record of the Year, which goes to the artist and producer. First Lady Jill Biden presented Song of the Year to Bonnie Raitt for “Just Like That,” her fourth win on the day. Sarama Joy won Best New Artist.

Styles won three Grammys in all, taking the first and last primetime awards presented. He also snagged Best Pop Vocal Album for Harry’s House, which during the preshow had won Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Kendrick Lamar took Best Rap Album for Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, as the Grammys celebrated 50 years of hip-hop, and Willie Nelson won Country Album for A Beautiful Time.

Adele snagged a 16th career Grammy when “Easy on Me” won for Pop Vocal Performance. Sam Smith & Kim Petras took Best Pop/Duo Group Performance for “Unholy.” Petras is the first transgender woman to win the category. Bad Bunny, the most streamed artist of 2022 around the world, won Best Música Urbana Album for Un Verano Sin Ti.

Beyoncé, Raitt and Maverick City Music led the field with four Grammy wins each today (the latter including three with Kirk Franklin), with Brandi Carlile, Styles and Lamar next with three each. Lizzo, Ozzy Osbourne and Encanto also were multiple winners.

As for the performances tonight, the Grammys’ salute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop included a medley of such classics — performed by many of the originals — as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s “The Message,” Run-DMC’s “King of Rock,” LL Cool J’s “I Can’t Live without My Radio,” Salt-N-Pepa’s “My Mic Sounds Nice,” Eric B & Rakim’s “Eric B. Is President,” Public Enemy’s “Rebel without a Pause,” Ice-T’s “New Jack Hustler,” Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y,” Wu-Tang Clan’s “Wu-Tang,” OutKast’s “ATLiens,” Jay-Z’s “Show Me What You Got,” Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control,” Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” and Too Short’s “Blow the Whistle.”

Bad Bunny opened the show with a medley “El Apagón” and “Despues la Playa,” from his Grammy-winner and Album of the Year nominee Un Verano Sin Ti. Carlile then played her double-Grammy-winning hit “Broken Horses.”

Stevie Wonder later introduced and played piano on “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” honoring the MusiCares Persons of the Year: Motown founder Berry Gordy and star Smokey Robinson. The latter performed “Tears of a Clown,” and Wonder took vocal on his hit “Higher Ground” with Chris Stapleton taking a couple of verses and playing guitar.

Lizzo played a medley from her Album of the Year candidate Special, Styles performed “As It Was,” and Mary J. Blige did her multi-nominated “Good Morning Gorgeous.” Smith & Petras returned to play their Grammy-winning “Unholy,” and Luke Combs did “Going, Going, Gone.” Steve Lacy was joined by Thunderclap to perform his chart-topping smash “Bad Habit.”

The evening’s In Memoriam segment featured multiple performances. Kasey Musgraves opened with a solo acoustic take on Loretta Lynn’s standard “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Quavo later took the stage with Maverick City Music to sing his “Without You,” which followed a recorded live version of Jeff Beck’s “Beck’s Bolero” during the segment. Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt and Mick Fleetwood then performed “Songbird.”

Dr. Dre was honored as the first recipient of the Grammys’ Dr. Dre Global Impact Award.
