Afrobeats sensation Davido, along with four other Nigerian artists, faced disappointment at the 66th Grammy Awards as they failed to secure wins in their respective categories, despite multiple nominations.

Davido, who was nominated in three categories—Best Global Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best African Music Performance—lost out on all fronts during Sunday night’s ceremony. The setback marks another year of Grammy near-misses for the acclaimed Nigerian artist.

In a surprising turn of events, South Africa’s Tyla clinched her first Grammy Award in the Best Global Music Performance category, triumphing over a lineup that included Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, and Ayra Starr.

Before the awards ceremony, Davido had expressed optimism about his chances of securing his first Grammy win. Speaking with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly, the artist revealed his excitement at being nominated for the first time and expressed hope for recognition in the Best African Music Performance category.

Davido emphasized the significance of the African music category at the prestigious awards, suggesting that its introduction was long overdue. “The Best African Music Performance category feels long overdue for African music to be celebrated,” he remarked. “If there was an African category years ago, a lot of people would have had the opportunity to be recognized by the Grammy.”
