Divock Origi missed a glorious chance to give Liverpool the lead against Burnley on the stroke of half time, but Graeme Souness says he saw that miss coming.

The Belgian striker, who made a rare start for the Reds, found himself clean through on goal as he latched onto Ben Mee’s error.

However, he was unable to put the ball in the net as his curling effort crashed against the crossbar before Clarets goalkeeper Nick Pope caught the loose ball.

The miss came back to haunt Liverpool as they were beaten 1-0 by Burnley thanks to Ashley Barnes’ late penalty.

It was the first time the Reds tasted defeat on home turf in the Premier League since April 2017 when they lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace,

Origi has scored a number of important goals for Liverpool, however, he failed to end his side’s 438-minute scoreless run in the top-flight.

And Souness insisted he never backed Origi to score the chance.

Souness said on Sky Sports: “Anyone but him really.

“I know he’s got some important goals for Liverpool but I said to you ‘he’s not going to score here’.

“His first and second touches are great, has time to open his body up and he’s missed it.

“You can say six inches lower or six inches left but it isn’t, it doesn’t hit the back of the net. It’s a bad miss.”
