Good Morning Britain viewers were left laughing this morning, January 3, as union boss Mick Lynch hit back at presenter Richard Madeley. Richard and co-host Susanna Reid welcomed the trade unionist back onto the show as five days of rail strike action are set to take place this week.
Just a few weeks ago, Mick and Richard clashed on-air as the 66-year-old presenter, who owns a home near Polperro, accused Mick of ‘targeting people at Christmas’. Richard’s comments about the union ‘robbing’ businesses of their usual festive income saw Good Morning Britain hit with scores of Ofcom complaints.
And it seemed that Richard was intent on angling in at Mick once again during today’s episode of GMB, as he and Susanna Reid interviewed Mick from the picket line outside Euston railway station. Reflecting on his last chat with Mick, Richard said: “One of the points of issue when we last spoke two or three weeks ago was the impact of these Christmas strikes on the hospitality industry.

“And, in a later interview with the Radio 4 Today programme, you spoke of what you feel to be a ‘right wing media conspiracy’ against your union not to tell the truth. So, let me quote The Guardian from three days ago – obviously a left wing newspaper.
“The Guardian says that your strikes have cost hospitality in this country £1.5bn in December alone and that a huge swathe of businesses and jobs are now being lost, which is something I put to you two weeks ago.”
Richard then said: “It looks as if I was kind of right, doesn’t it?” Seeming unbothered, Mick sarcastically replied: “Well, Richard, you’re always right, as everybody in the country knows.”
Mick then went on to say that those working in the hospitality industry are ‘rightly cross’, and that the head of the UK Hospitality organisation was ‘livid’ with the government’s inaction. Mick concluded by saying: “The hospitality industry and many other businesses are suffering because of government policy because they won’t settle this dispute.”
Appearing to hit back at Mick’s sarcastic comment, Richard replied: “Well, they say they’re suffering because of your strikes and I will personally, on this side of the desk, try and keep any personal abuse out of this side of the conversation, Mr Lynch.”
On Twitter, viewers branded Richard ’embarrassing’ for his interviewing style, something he has been criticised for over the years. Others showed support for striking rail workers, and demanded that Richard is removed from GMB.
