Extreme Weather Fiona and Nanmadol Wreak Havoc in Puerto Rico, Japan

Five years after the devastation of Hurricane Maria, Fiona left all 3.3 million residents of the U.S. island of Puerto Rico without power — but electricity in San Juan’s hospital complex has since been restored. The Category 1 storm, which killed a man on the French island of Guadeloupe, is now headed for the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Typhoon Nanmadol lashed the Japanese island of Kyushu with 100 mph winds and torrential rains. One person was killed and another reported missing. “We need to remain highly vigilant for heavy rains, gales, high waves and storm surges,” the Japanese Meteorological Agency warned. Take a Hike Central Banks Around the World Expected to Raise Interest Rates

Shares slipped in Asia and the dollar firmed as markets braced for a jam-packed week of central bank meetings. The U.K., Switzerland and South Africa are expected to raise interest rates by at least 50 basis points. U.S. markets, meanwhile, are priced for an increase of 75 basis points — but futures are showing a one-in-five chance of a full percentage point hike. Asked how high it could go, Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius said, “High enough to generate a tightening in financial conditions that imposes a drag on activity sufficient to maintain a solidly below-potential growth trajectory.” (Source: Reuters)

Fast One 70 Years Later Cheetahs Return to India — But Experts Are Divided

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated his 72nd birthday Saturday by releasing eight radio-collared cheetahs, which had been flown 5,000 miles from Namibia, into Kuno National Park. The cheetah went extinct in India in 1952, and S.P. Yadav of the National Tiger Conservation Authority said it’s “our moral and ethical responsibility to bring it back.” But others say this misses the point: African cheetahs aren’t the same as the Asian subspecies that’s now only found in Iran. Besides, the park is unfenced and biologist Ullas Karanth says “they’ll be knocked out within six months” by domestic dogs and leopards. (Source: Reuters)

Snail Trail German Customs Officials Confiscate 93 Giant African Land Snails

When officials at Düsseldorf Airport spotted an 8-inch snail on a baggage truck they first thought it was a toy — until it started moving. They then kicked into detective mode, following the slime trail to a bag with another snail peeping out of an opening. Before long they’d seized 93 snails, 62 pounds of fish and smoked meat, and a suitcase of rotting meat, all imported from Nigeria. “Never in the history of the Düsseldorf customs office has a trail of slime led us to smuggled goods,” said spokesman Michael Walk. Aces High ‘Chokers’ No More: Las Vegas Claims First WNBA Title

The Aces shook their reputation for dominating the regular season — finishing first or second the past three years — but choking in the playoffs. Sunday night they took the Finals with a seesawing 78-71 win over the Connecticut Sun. Finals MVP Chelsea Gray scored the most with 20 points, but it was Riquna Williams who sealed the win with 11 points in the fourth quarter and 17 in total. “What I’m most proud of is we became a real team out here,” said coach Becky Hammon, who was named WNBA coach of the year. “A team that cares about each other and trusts each other.” (Source: NYT)
