GMB: Dr Hilary tells pub landlord to ‘stick to pulling pints’

Dr Hilary, 67, joined Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid, 50, and Adil Ray, 46, to once again offer his medical expertise as the pandemic continues to have an impact on everyday life. The trio were also joined by pub landlord Rod Humphris, who has become famous for throwing Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer, 58, out of his establishment in Bath because he didn’t agree with how the opposition responded to the Government’s lockdown measures. However, as the guest explained himself a little further, the ITV medical expert struggled to bite his tongue and unleashed his fury.

“With the greatest of respect, Rod, I think you should stick to pulling pints rather than advising the Government about the policy on the biggest pandemic, public health issue for the last 100 years,” Dr Hilary began.

“In India now, there are 270,000 people a day coming down with COVID-19 and in Brazil, 250 children under the age of nine have died from Covid in the last six weeks.

“518 of them were under one, babies are dying from Covid. If we ignore a pandemic and we say lockdown doesn’t work, how do you think it spreads in the first place?

“Person-to-person contact and if you look at all the countries that locked down earlier, they’ve had better health outcomes and better economies.

“It’s very simple. Look at every peak we’ve had. What happened when we had a peak of 1,200 deaths a day?”

The medical expert added: “We went into lockdown and the numbers came down. It’s very simple.

“You have to have lockdown in a pandemic that kills people. And if you’re saying at 83 it doesn’t matter if you die, you’re saying for the likes of Prince Philip, the last 16 years of his life were meaningless and worthless – we can’t allow that to happen. We can’t be that ageist.”

Rod explained: “Firstly, Chris Whitty or Patrick Vallance said when we went into lockdown, the number of infections, deaths were already falling.

“So there is no established cause or link. This has been researched all over the world – the cause and link between lockdowns and the number of deaths or hospitalisations are just not there.”

Dr Hilary didn’t agree and as the row continued, he said: “Tell me how it happens, then? It’s not vaccinations because they’ve not had time to take effect yet.

“It will reduce hospitalisations and deaths but how do you think we got out of the first two peaks?”

Taking to Twitter, viewers reacted to the debate, with one writing: “The best part of the programme and the person talking the most sense and truth was Rod and you cut him off #GMB.”

Another posted: “Turned #GMB off, they shouldn’t gang up and hang out a member of the public to dry.”

Whilst a third remarked: “#GMB Susanna Reid cutting off the pub landlord as he was asking her to put her stated 150,000 Covid deaths in perspective.”

Keir Starmer gets thrown out of pub by landlord

“Traffic accidents, heart attacks etc are not caused by Covid – also zero deaths caused by flu this year is rather strange. Let the man speak,” they continued.

Humphris confronted the Labour leader when he was continuing the campaign trail for next month’s local elections on Monday.

Talking with Sir Starmer in the street, Humphris explained he felt the opposition had “failed” him after he has voted for them all his life.

When the politician tried to enter The Raven pub in Bath following his conversation with the landlord, the situation turned extremely heated as Sir Starmer was asked to leave.

Explaining why he threw the politician out of the pub, Humphris said: “I had heard that the Labour Party were coming round and he turned up and I told him what I thought of him, basically.

“I think he has utterly failed us as the leader of the opposition. He has completely failed to ask the questions that needed asking, like, why did we throw away our previous pandemic preparedness?

“Why have we just accepted lockdown? Why have we just accepted the loss of all our freedoms?” he told the BBC.

The Labour press office took to Twitter and wrote: “Keir argued that our NHS staff have been working tirelessly to protect public health and that restrictions – while painful – have been absolutely necessary to save lives.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
