Glenn Hoddle would return Phil Foden to England’s starting line-up on Wednesday night against Denmark in the semi-finals of Euro 2020, leaving both Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho on the bench.
Gareth Southgate is expected to make one change from the side that thrashed Ukraine 4-0 in the quarter-finals, with Sancho likely to drop out and Saka returning after missing the last game with a knock.
That is certainly not the only option available to Southgate, with calls still being made for Jack Grealish to play from the start, but it is Manchester City’s Foden who Hoddle would pick.
Foden started the first two matches of the tournament, but has not played a minute since, and Hoddle thinks it is time for the 21-year-old to return.
‘There’ll only be one change and it’ll be on that right-hand side,’ the former England boss told the Daily Mail at a Betfair event.
‘Foden’s done that job, don’t be surprised if he comes back in. Saka did OK when he played, didn’t he? He’s a great player for that flexibility. But for me, I’d bring Foden back in on that side.
‘Sancho could be the right person again, Grealish is an option too… but I think our bench is as good as anything in European football and I include France and Belgium and Portugal in that, our squad is so deep.
‘We haven’t gone into extra-time yet. If I was a Danish player in extra-time, the last thing I want is Foden, Grealish, Rashford with his pace. We’ve got so much quality to win a game or turn it around.’

While it is expected to be Saka that comes in for Sancho, the other 10 positions in the starting XI are almost certain to remain the same from the trip to Rome on Saturday.
Jordan Pickford will be in goal behind a back four of Kyle Walker, John Stones, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.
Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips will remain ever-present at the base of midfield, with Mason Mount in front of them.
Leaving Saka most likely to come in on the opposite wing to Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane continue to lead the line up front.
