Giants icon MadBum throws seven-inning no-hitter vs. Braves

Madison Bumgarner made some history on Sunday, as the former Giants southpaw tossed a no-hitter for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Atlanta Braves in the second leg of a doubleheader.

However, due to the game being seven innings as part of MLB’s new rules on doubleheaders, it will not be considered an official no-hitter.

Bumgarner struck out seven and didn’t surrender a walk. The only baserunner of the night came on a fielding error by Nick Ahmed.

The three-time World Champion, who won World Series MVP in 2014 with the Giants, unveiled some of his trademark dry humor in his postgame press conference following the outing, thanking his opponent and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred for limiting doubleheaders to seven innings.

Bumgarner becomes the first pitcher since 2006 to throw a no-hitter in a complete game of fewer than nine innings per ESPN Stats and Info.

Atlanta’s offense had a particularly rough day at the plate, as they set an MLB record by registering just one hit across the two games.

Bumgarner left San Francisco after 11 years with the Giants in 2019, choosing to sign with the Diamondbacks.

The veteran never has thrown a nine-inning no-hitter in his MLB career, but regardless of how many innings Sunday’s game lasted, such a feat should be celebrated and add another chapter to what has been a historic career.

Bumgarner’s brilliance, especially in the postseason, has forever made him an icon in the eyes of Giants fans.

After struggling in 2020 and early in the 2021 season with the Diamondbacks, this impressive showing could be a turning point for Bumgarner.

Since spectators were not allowed to attend games in 2020, Giants fans potentially will get their first chance to see MadBum in a different uniform at Oracle Park when Arizona visits San Francisco June 14-17.
