Giants’ Hall of Famer: ‘It’s very hard to watch. Take chances. What do you have to lose?’

The first pick of the NFL Draft next spring is within their grasp.

And, look, Michael Strahan isn’t asking for a miracle victory that would jeopardize the Giants’ chances of getting a quarterback, but a few points would be nice.

Strahan, a Fox NFL analyst, was uncomfortable watching the alma mater and the Hall of Fame defensive end was even more uncomfortable when they asked for his input at halftime on Sunday, with the Dallas Cowboys humiliating the Giants, 28-0, at halftime — after beating them 40-0 in the season opener.

The Giants — now 2-8 — eventually lost, 49-17, at AT&T Stadium. And to make Strahan wince even more, the Giants were shredded for 682 yards, the most since a 56-7 loss to the Bears in 1943.

“I think for the Giants you know — as a former Giant, it’s very hard to watch — it’s one thing to lose games, but it’s another thing to lose games and not be competitive,” Strahan said at halftime on Fox. “I know they’ve had a string of injuries and all those things, but they still should be somewhat competitive in some of these games.

“If you have a young quarterback, or a rookie quarterback, what do you have to lose? Take some chances. On fourth down, do something. Take some shots down the field. The Giants need to do something to spark their offense.”

When host Kurt Menafee noted the Cowboys had outscored the Giants 68-0 in a game and a half, Strahan replied: “Thanks, Kurt. Thanks for pointing that out.”

Third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito, an undrafted free agent out of Illinois, was elevated from the practice squad last week after backup Tyrod Taylor went on injured reserve with broken ribs. And with Daniel Jones now out for the season with an ACL injury, the 25-year-old from New Jersey will be the sacrificial lamb for now.

DeVito became the 10th rookie to start an NFL game this season, the most starting rookie QBs since stats began being tracked in 1950. He was 15-of-20 for 175 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions against the Raiders in a 30-6 loss last week after replacing Jones early in the second quarter.

Maybe the Giants were listening. On their opening drive of the second half, DeVito hit tight end Lawrence Cager for a touchdown.
