Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has won Euro 2020 player of the tournament after Gli Azzurri were crowned European champions for the first time since 1968.

In doing so, the 22-year-old (yes, he is actually still only 22) becomes the first goalkeeper to ever win the award – having fended off competition from the likes of Raheem Sterling and Jorginho for the prize.

Donnarumma has enjoyed a remarkable few years as Italy’s number one – since taking over from Gianluigi Buffon – going over 1,000 minutes without conceding at international level until Austria scored in his nation’s 2-1 round of 16 win.

His incredible international form culminated in final heroics, commanding his 18-yard box well throughout the 120 minutes of normal and extra time, before saving two penalties in a shootout to crown Italy European champions.

The young goalkeeper is one of the hottest commodities in the summer transfer market too. Having refused to sign a new deal at AC Milan, Donnarumma is set to leave San Siro to join Paris Saint-Germain within the next few weeks.

The Italy number one is one of the many big name players set to join PSG following their disappointing 2020/21 season – a season in which they failed to win Ligue 1 (yes, really). Donnarumma is set to join Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi in coming through the entrance at the French giants.
