Political activist group GetUp! has issued a statement denying any involvement in the abuse Liberal MP Nicolle Flint claims she faced during her 2019 federal election campaign. “Where were the senior Labor women when GetUp, Labor, and union supporters chased, harassed, and screamed at me everywhere I went?” she said in an impassioned speech in parliament on Tuesday. GetUp! has since claimed a thorough investigation has been conducted into the allegations confirming no staff or members were involved and said the claims were part of a long-running effort to “smear” their reputation. “The harassment experienced by Nicolle Flint is abhorrent to GetUp! as an organisation,” the statement read. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he saw firsthand the appalling behaviour directed at Nicolle Flint during his time campaigning in South Australia for the last federal election. Mr Morrison commended Ms Flint for continuing to stand in “the face of the most vitriolic abuse, stalking, and threats to her own public security” describing the situation as “appalling”. “I just am amazed the Labor party, the unions and GetUp! just stood by and let that happen. They were aware. They saw it. They were happy to be advantaged by it,” he said. Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese and Labor frontbencher Penny Wong this morning rejected allegations they were aware of Nicolle Flint’s treatment. Mr Albanese condemned the treatment of Ms Flint while Ms Wong hit back at the allegations, describing them as “deeply unfair”. She offered to meet with Ms Flint to discuss her situation privately, criticising the Liberal MP’s decision to make her treatment public. “I would say to Ms Flint rather than making these accusations in public and through Twitter, let’s have a discussion about how we can work and use our positions, which do carry some privilege, to improve the situation for all women,” Ms Wong said.
