George Murphy, best known for giving Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a heads-up on weekly fuel prices, died suddenly Saturday.
Murphy suffered a heart attack while enjoying a night around the fire pit with friends and family.
Social media was flooded with tributes to Murphy as news of his death spread Sunday morning.
Apart from his yeoman’s work as the province’s unofficial gas guru, he was also a former MHA, having served in the House of Assembly as the NDP member for the former district of St. John’s East from 2011 to 2015.
Murphy was the spokesperson for the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices since 2006, but was also a longtime driver and recently the business manager for Jiffy Cabs.
