‘Genuine case’ to say Leicester squad too good to go down – Shearer
Leicester #Leicester
Alan Shearer said having so many players out of contract was on of Leicester’s big downfalls this season.
After the Foxes’ relegation was confirmed, Shearer was asked what went wrong for the club this season and told Match of the Day: “They had a decent start, but they didn’t replace Kasper Schmeichel, I think that was the first problem.
“Then having so many players out of contract. We’ve heard it said so many times over the years that a team is too good to go down. When you look at some of the ability in that Leicester team, I think there is a genuine case this year to say exactly that.
“They picked up before the World Cup, but when you have that many players out of contract I don’t think that is healthy for your football club.
“I’m not saying they don’t care, but it’s not a healthy situation. When you look at the success that Leicester had, there are 12 or 13 clubs in the Premier League that could happen to in the near future because the system is designed to make upward mobility very, very difficult. So just be careful what you wish for.”
