The day has arrived and Hu Tao is live in Genshin Imapct (depending on what time you’re reading this). The funeral parlor director is our newest five star, and another hugely anticipated Genshin Impact hero, a pyro polearm user whose main role is DPS, combining elements of Xiao and Childe’s kits.

If you manage to land her, you’re going to want to build her out properly for maximum effectiveness. That involves some careful selection of both polearms and artifacts, and there are a few different options I think you can go with, depending on what’s available in your Genshin Impact collection.

Here are the best builds you may want to go with for Hu Tao:

Artifacts:

Gladiator’s Finale (boss farm) 2-Piece: ATK +18%. 4-Piece: If the wielder of this artifact set uses a Sword, Claymore or Polearm, increases their Normal Attack DMG by 35%.

Lavawalker (Hidden Palace of Zhou) 2-Piece: Pyro RES increased by 40%. 4-Piece: Increased DMG against enemies affected by Pyro by 35%.

Crimson Witch of Flames (Hidden Palace of Zhou) 2-Piece: Pyro DMG Bonus +15%. 4-Piece: Increases Overloaded and Burning DMG by 40%. Increases Vaporize and Melt DMG by 15%. Using an Elemental SKill increases 2-Piece Set effects by 50% for 10s. Max 3 stacks.

So, I think there are two main options here. One would be to do two pieces of Gladiator’s for ATK and two pieces of Crimson Witch for Pyro DMG. Doing four pieces of Crimson Witch won’t really work well with Hu Tao’s elemental skill as you can’t stack it, unlike say, Diluc.

Rather, while the Lavawalker two piece bonus is pretty useless, the four piece 35% DMG against enemies affected by Pyro seems kind of perfect for her, given that she will constantly have Pyro DMG up for the most part. I think I’m leaning toward this overall. And whatever you choose, % pyro DMG is a must for a piece.

Weapons:

Staff of Homa (5 star): HP increased by 20%. Additionally, provides an ATK Bonus based on 0.8% of the wielder’s Max HP. When the wielder’s HP is less than 50%, this ATK Bonus is increased by an additional 1% of Max HP.

Jade Winged Spear (5 star): On hit, increases ATK by 3.2% for 6s. Max 7 stacks. This effect can only occur once every 0.3s. While in possession of the maximum possible stacks, DMG dealt is increased by 12%.

Skyward Spine (5 star): Increases CRIT Rate by 8% and increases Normal ATK SPD by 12%. Additionally, Normal and Charged Attacks hits on enemies have a 50% chance to trigger a vacuum blade that deals 40% of ATK as DMG in a small AoE. This effect can occur no more than once every 2s.

Deathmatch (4 star): If there are at least 2 enemies nearby, ATK is increased by 16%. If there are less than 2 enemies nearby, ATK is increased by 24%.

Obviously the three 5 stars are your best bet, starting with the new staff that is specifically designed to work with Hu Tao’s health-reducing kit. But Xiao’s Jade spear is not bad either, nor is the energy regen of the Skyward Spine. Your best 4 star option is probably Deathmatch for sure.

Play around with these setups and see what you think is best before fully investing in one. But it will probably be hard to go wrong with Hu Tao in general. Best of luck in your pull attempts.
