FLINT – Everything you need to know about Genesee Christian sophomore Trenton Boike can be summed up by one game.
He scored 34 points against Beecher.
State champion Beecher.
The same Beecher team that prides itself on playing defense first and worrying about offense later.
That performance no doubt impressed the 11 sports writers from around Michigan who selected the Division 4 All-State team. They put Boike on the first team along with Mr. Basketball Pierre Brooks II of Detroit Douglass.
Pretty good company, eh?
Boike led Genesee Christian to a 9-8 record and a spot in the Division 4 district finals by averaging 21.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists.
He made 44.5 percent of his 3-point attempts and shot 51 percent from the field overall as well as 88 percent from the foul line.
He also made the All-Genesee Area Conference Red first team, a unit that included Beecher’s Keyon Menifield, Carmelo Harris and James Cummings II. Again, pretty good company.
In addition to the Beecher game, one of his best outings came in a 71-63 loss to Bendle. Genesee Christian spotted Bendle the game’s first 16 points before outscoring the Tigers 24-3 in the second quarter to take 33-30 lead at halftime.
Boike scored 10 points in the second quarter and 14 more in the fourth to finish with a game-high 31.
Boike was the only Flint-area player named to the Division 4 team.
