Gayle King’s extraordinary attack as she accuses Palace of ‘full-scale Meghan takedown’

Gayle King has accused the Royal Family of launching “a full-scale takedown” of Meghan Markle hours ahead of tonight’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The CBS This Morning host, 66, who allowed filming of the sit-down chat to be staged at her own plush Californian mansion, took aim at Buckingham Palace for choosing now to investigate claims of bullying made against Meghan instead of months ago.

Speaking on Friday as she introduced a new teaser clip of the interview, Gayle questioned the motive of senior royal aides for launching a probe and compared it to the investigation into Prince Andrew’s connection to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

“The Palace – also known as The Firm – has launched what appears to be a full-scale takedown of Meghan which is raging in the UK right now, saying she was a mean girl who mistreated staff, and if you meet Meghan Markle nothing could be further from the truth,” she told viewers.

“I was thinking, how is that investigation going with Prince Andrew who was a friend and associate of Jeffrey Epstein, and there were allegations of sleeping with underage girls? We’ve interviewed some of those girls, who are now women, who have told that story.

“But they appear to be on a huge takedown of Meghan. And what a coinkidink that these [bullying] allegations first surfaced in 2018 and he Palace has decided to investigate them now,” she added.

Prince Andrew has continued to deny allegations he had sex with underage girls, claiming in a car-crash 2019 interview with Emily Maitlis that he was at a children’s party at Pizza Express in Woking on the day of one allegation.

Gayle, who is best friends with Oprah and editor of O, The Oprah Magazine, was at Meghan’s New York baby shower while she was expecting Archie.

She also insisted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been “vilified” by the public and said viewers should wait until they’ve watched the 90-minute conversation before they make up their minds about who is in the wrong.

Meghan is expected to speak openly about her mental health in the CBS interview tonight, which airs in the US at 1am UK time on Monday, and again at 9pm on ITV.

“I think by the time the interview is over, people will have a very clear understanding about what went into their thought process [about leaving the royal family],” Gayle went on.

“I believe that that will be the case.

“Then people can make up their own minds. Because vilified is the word for what has happened to Harry and Meghan, Meghan in particular,” she added.
