Leaks have been detected in two Russian gas pipelines to Europe after suspected acts of sabotage, sending gas prices higher.

The Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines are both leaking gas into the Baltic Sea after severe damage that will scupper any remaining hopes of Nord Stream 1 returning to service this winter.

Powerful subsea blasts were detected in the areas of the leaks on Monday by the Swedish national seismology centre, according to Swedish broadcaster SVT.

Mateusz Morawiecki, Poland’s Prime Minister, said: “We see clearly that it’s an act of sabotage, related to the next step of escalation of the situation in Ukraine.”

A senior Ukrainian official called it a Russian attack to destabilise Europe, Reuters reported.
