Gary Neville has been praised by fans after sharing an impressively frank and honest video ahead of his first time presenting Have I Got News For You.

The former Manchester United star has become a respected, outspoken political voice on social media and tonight he’ll be joining Paul Merton and Ian Hislop to look back aat the news of the week with a satirical edge.

Neville might have 10 years of experience as a top football pundit on television, but he’s taking on a different challenge.

Subsequently, he opened up about his anxiety and feeling the ‘stretch’ – not stress – ahead of filming.

Filming from his dressing room, he shared a video on Instagram and said: ‘I’m about to get the call to go on stage and present Have I Got News For You.

‘For the first time, probably, I’d say in maybe 10 years since I did my first Monday night football I actually feel quite nervous and a little bit… I used the word stretch, not stressed, a little bit stretched and I’m just videoing this in an uncomfortable moment because we sometimes put ourselves in these moments in life, we’ve never done it before, I always used to say it was like diving in the deep end as a kid when you haven’t got your arm bands on for the first time.

‘You don’t know what’s going to happen, that little bit of trepidation.’

Stressing an important message to his followers, he continued: ‘This is my thought of the week: you have to pout yourselves in life in those moments of stretch where you’re presenting, you’re on autocue, I’ve got what I feel are intelligent, clever, experienced, broadcaster types around me and I am not a presenter so here goes!

Well done, Gary! (Picture: @gneville2)

‘You’ll be able to watch the show tonight but I’m just letting you know there are moments of vulnerability even though sometimes you look confident.’

Neville was applauded for his honesty by fans.

One wrote: ‘Well said Gary and best of luck!’ while many more echoed the same sentiments.

‘Can’t wait to watch this but what a great video good to show people especially kids that everyone feels vulnerable at time and that it’s ok the main thinking is to put yourself out there,’ added another follower.

Announcing he was joining the show, Neville previously said: ‘I’m petrified, thrilled, and everything in-between to announce that I’ll be hosting HIGNFY next week, something I’ve never done before and a massive step out of my comfort zone but I’m looking forward to the challenge.

‘It’s one of my favourite shows and it couldn’t be a more bizarre time in UK politics.’

Gary, you’ll be great.

Have I Got News For You airs tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
