Gary Neville has joked that Roy Keane wrote “game over” as he took notes whilst his colleagues celebrated an England goal.

The former Manchester United duo were part of ITV’s punditry team for the Three Lions’ last-16 win over Senegal. First-half strikes from Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane put England on course for the World Cup quarter-finals before Bukayo Saka added a third in the second half.

Footage was broadcast showing Ian Wright and Neville celebrating one of England’s early strikes, but Keane’s reaction has caught the attention. The Irishman has no allegiance to the Three Lions and was motionless as his colleagues celebrated, before turning to jot down some brief notes.

A tweet was put out asking what Keane could’ve been writing as the other two celebrated and Neville has reacted by saying “game over”. Keane was always confident that England would win, whilst others were more apprehensive about the challenge posed by Senegal, who won the Africa Cup of Nations at the start of the year.

The Irishman was also hugely complimentary about Jude Bellingham, who excelled in the middle of the park, assisting Henderson’s opener. “When it’s a bit tight, you need a midfielder to run and produce a bit of magic, and that’s what Bellingham did there. Brilliant,” Keane told ITV.

“This is what you want from a midfielder: powerful, strong, anticipation, a little bit of luck, but it’s game over. He’s going to be a superstar, that kid. We keep using the word but maturity, he plays like he’s played 100 times for England.”

Neville echoed Keane’s thoughts on Bellingham as he added: “He’s been absolutely incredible in that half, even in the first 10 minutes. He was the one that was hunting people down, he’s so young yet he’s got real quality and that composure he’s shown in that final third has been absolutely fantastic.”

England’s win has set up a last-eight clash with France, who are looking to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to defend a World Cup. They saw off Poland with Kylian Mbappe in irresistible form and Neville believes the clash between Les Blues and Three Lions is a unique occasion.

“It’s a game of a lifetime on Saturday,” he told Sky Sports. “When I think back to my own career and playing in games like that in Euro 1996 or in 2004 and 2006 against Portugal, these games are once or twice in a lifetime opportunities. England versus France on a Saturday night at a World Cup quarter-final, they don’t come around in your life very often. They are big moments. I can’t wait.”
