Liverpool fans will be able to celebrate their team being top of the Premier League on Christmas Day yet again this season, with the last time that was not the case back in 2017.
Their resounding and clinical victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday ensured their status at the top cannot be taken from them until at least Boxing Day.
And moving forward through the season, they are in the driving seat to stay there long-term and retain their Premier League title crown.
Tottenham, who were level on points with Liverpool until the last minute at Anfield on Wednesday night when Roberto Firmino netted a late winner, are now six points behind, while Pep Guardiola and Man City are eight off, albeit with a game in hand.
Gary Lineker took to Twitter as Tottenham were beaten by Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City on Sunday afternoon to pose the question of whether Liverpool can be caught.
“Leicester, Everton and Spurs in the top 4. How marvelous. But what can we possibly do about Liverpool?” the Match of the Day host wrote.
The three teams who Lineker played for in his career made up the top four heading into the 4.30pm kick-off between Manchester United and Leeds United.
However, the Old Trafford side moved up to third after stunning Leeds United, moving a point ahead of Tottenham, two ahead of Southampton, and level with Everton. The six strikes they put past Marco Bielsa’s side though allowed them to sit above the Blues on goal difference.
The gap at the top of the table currently stands at four points with Leicester in second and Man United have a game in hand.
But Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will take some beating from where they find themselves, with players like Thiago Alcantara still to return to the fold for the league-leaders in the second half of the season.
