Former Arsenal defender William Gallas thinks the Gunners are “missing something” at right-back as he doubts their title chances.
The Gunners ran Manchester City very close last season with Mikel Arteta’s men leading the way for two thirds of the season before falling behind Pep Guardiola’s side in the home straight.
Arsenal finished just five points behind the Citizens at the end of the season as Man City went on to win a historic Treble.
Despite Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz adding to the quality already in their squad this summer, Gallas still thinks they are “missing the character and the personality” to win the Premier League title.
Gallas told Gambling Zone: “I’m sure Arsenal will get very close to winning the title this season, but I don’t think they be crowned champions in May. I think Arsenal are missing the character and the personality to become champions – these are the qualities that they needed to show at the end of last season, and they couldn’t.”
Ben White played as a right-back for Arsenal for much of last season and Gallas thinks the 25-year-old could their weak link this season.
Gallas added: “The only problem that I have with the Arsenal team is Ben White at right back. Ben White can help Arsenal playing there, but he is not a natural right back – that is not his position. Against Manchester City, I think we saw some of his limitations in that role.
“I think he struggles when wingers run at him – especially top-class players. When Arsenal come up against the best teams, they will need a proper right back. I think they’re missing something there.”
Gallas continued: “No, I don’t think Kai Havertz will show his potential in this Arsenal team. I don’t believe that Havertz was a player that Arsenal needed to sign this summer. For me, even when he was at Chelsea, he was never consistent enough. He scored some important goals for the club, and he played well in flashes.
“He didn’t put in enough good performances during his Chelsea career in my opinion. When I saw Arsenal were signing him, I didn’t really understand it. I was surprised that they signed him.”
