Jack Grealish has been benched by Gareth Southgate for tonight’s Nations League clash against Belgium at Wembley.

The Aston Villa captain dazzled in a man-of-the-match display on his full England debut in the 3-0 win against Wales on Thursday.

He set up Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s debut goal and was widely praised by pundits, with several drawing comparisons between the 25-year-old and Three Lions legend Paul Gascoigne.

But Grealish is back on the bench alongside Villa teammate Tyrone Mings having been replaced by Mason Mount in the starting XI as Southgate goes for a 3-4-3 set-up with Marcus Rashford on the other flank and Calvert-Lewin through the middle.

Southgate played down the Gascoigne comparisons ahead of this evening’s match, saying: “I don’t want to be dampening the enthusiasm for Jack.

“When you’re talking about Gascoigne, there is not a player in English history who was at that level. I just feel that Gascoigne is so unique. It’s a bit like talking about Bobby Moore.”

Southgate played almost 250 times for Villa between 1995 and 2001 but the 50-year-old is becoming increasingly unpopular with fans of his former club.

Here is a selection of responses on social media to Grealish’s omission.

@Haveylandau1: No way he’s not put Grealish in there this guy is clueless man.

@Quentin_gsp: No Grealish no party.

@JamieeAVFC: Is it bad that I want England to lose? Just to show what when you don’t start the most in form player on the team sheet. Southgate man, what a joker.

@Jackdotcom: Southgate been taking tips of Bruce. Three right backs.

@Tomlxnee: Three right backs, Maguire starting and no Grealish or Coady; Gareth Mountgate in full effect loooooooooooooool.

@GrealishSZNN: There’s no way, the most in-form attacking mid in Europe + Man Of Match on England debut hasn’t made the first team? Unreal man.

@Thejourneyman01: England’s manager seriously has an issue so I hope we lose bad!!.

@NathanDawe: Absolute shambles of a manager. Honestly a laughing stock.

@MarkavParry: Hope we get smashed.

@RalphRoseppy: What has Mount done to deserve this over Grealish? The disrespect.
